What makes a Gulf terrace usable for nine months of the year
A terrace in the UAE is easy to build and hard to use. Four decisions carry most of the
outcome: the geometry of the shade above, the temperature of the surface underfoot, the
root zone temperature inside every pot, and the light level after 19:00. Each note below
is written around one of the four, with measured figures rather than adjectives.
Shade geometry, paving temperature, root zone temperature and light level each control a
different variable, and each delivers a different measured effect on a Dubai terrace at
latitude 25.2 degrees north.

The June sun over Dubai reaches 88 degrees at solar noon and still stands 81 degrees at
13:00, so a pergola built for that hour meets a near vertical beam. Slat
width, gap and run direction decide how much of the deck sits in shade, and a 140 mm
flat slat at a 180 mm pitch covers 78 per cent.
Air at 45 degrees does not burn skin, and dark porcelain at 74 degrees at 15:00 in July
does. Colour, mass and shade set the surface temperature of a Gulf terrace, and all
three are chosen before the slabs are delivered. Typical July readings for eight

Terrace plants rarely die of thirst. Terrace plants die because the root zone inside a
30 litre black pot reaches 48 to 52 degrees by 15:00 in July, and root
hairs stop working above 40 degrees. Pot volume, wall colour, mulch and irrigation
timing lower root zone temperature, and the reliable species list runs to a dozen plants.
A terrace needs between 5 and 100 lux depending on the task, against the 750 lux a
supermarket aisle runs at. Amber sources at 2200K collect 40 to 60 per cent fewer
insects than 4000K sources of matched lumens, and a shielded fixture below 400 mm keeps
the glare off the neighbours.
